Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Since she was the only child, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott completed her studies at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Along with two jobs part-time, she was also a teacher at Temple University. Her dream was to be a English High School teacher. The dream however was ended when, after three years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of university. A poet by trade started performing, she was able to perform in live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create an ensemble. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. At a Roots performance, she announced herself as a musician. She then secured collaborations, which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was also able to gain experience in the arts of performing during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first signed artist to label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
